We are not a "handy" family. We don't build things. We feel accomplished after assembling an IKEA bookshelf. However, this weekend Nathan and I proved to each other that we CAN effectively build something from conception to completion! It's amazing how the thought of your child tumbling backward down a staircase can elicit otherwise dormant skills!
*Side note: Why do stair-case builders and baby-gate designers not take a moment to consult one another during the design stages of their products? (This is a problem in the same vein as the hot-dog bun phenomenon). I had done copious amounts of research before we embarked on the aforementioned project looking for another solution- all leading to a dead end.
Anyway, long story short, installing a baby-gate at the end of our stairs meant building a support opposite the sole post of our banister. It may not be pretty, but it's sturdy, and most importantly, it's DONE! Gold stars all around.

We need to hire the Tower's! I just posted a blurb about how we can't find anything for the bottom of our stairs. We have the top gated off, but now I am trying to conquer the bottom and too found nothing that will fit. I am impressed with your design!
