THUMBS
By Shell Silverstein
From Where the Sidewalk Ends

Oh the thumb-sucker's thumb

May look wrinkled and wet

And withered, and white as the snow,

But the taste of a thumb

Is the sweetest taste yet

(As only we thumb-suckers know).

This is new territory-Trevor was not a thumb sucker at all. Tatum was sucking her thumb in the womb. I don't know whether to ignore it (and enjoy it's adorable-ness) or try to curb the habit, by replacing thumb for paci every chance I get. While it'd be nice to avoid going to her during bed time just to replace a paci, my thought is that a paci is easy to take away later on... thumbs are a different story. Anyone charted these waters? Advice?

Thanks again-and yes, I have a little girl, 14 months younger than her brother, who STILL SUCKS HER THUMB. My thought was survival...and she still does it. I've been told to stop her but I think it's too late for us. I'd let her do it. It makes getting up to soothe her a whole lot easier and you don't have to remember to send it to church like a paci! Ask me again in 5 years when she needs dental work :)
